IMPORTANT EARLY RUN OF THE PREMIER PERIODICAL DEDICATED TO GEOLOGY. "It was decided [by a Special General Committee of the Geological Society] first that there should be printed 750 copies of each volume of the journal, and second 'That the ink employed shall be of the best quality'. There was to be no skimping. The Society was determined to produce a journal capable of standing comparison with any other of the world's leading periodicals" (Herries Davies, Whatever is under the Earth; the Geological Society of London 1807 to 2007, p.37).
